If you’re a tenor or base located in Sydney - whether you’re a seasoned performer, a car-karaoke champion, or a shower-only singer with untapped potential, Soulfood might be exactly what you’ve been quietly looking for.

We’re a 50-member strong 'a cappella' choir based on the lower north shore, performing pop and soul arrangements that aim to tell stories, create moments and lift audiences off their seats.

We’re looking for tenor (baritone) and base parts. Mighty, warm-toned, harmony-loving singers who want to be part of something joyful and ambitious. This isn’t the world of robes, hymnals, or classical formality. Soulfood is a community first that's always striving towards musical excellence.

🎶 The Secret Engine of Soulfood

Our male voices bring contrast. Lift. Storytelling. Groove.

The tenor (baritone) part often sits right at the emotional hinge of the song - the line that makes the chord sparkle or the phrase that cuts through a texture with heart. Many of our tenors love to solo (because the voice type naturally fits so much contemporary repertoire) but here it’s always optional and always supported.

The base part is the foundation that everything else rests on, that anchors the harmony and gives the song its depth and drive. It’s the pulse you feel as much as hear, shaping the energy and grounding the story we’re telling, essential to the richness and balance of our collective sound.

You do not need to be able to:

  • read sheet music

  • have previously sung in a choir

  • understand notation

  • have any formal training

You do need:

  • a good ear

  • a sense of rhythm

  • willingness to learn

  • and a desire to be part of a supportive musical community

That last part is essential - our values centre on fun, generosity, ambition and human connection.

🎵 A Friendly, Supportive Audition Process

Auditions can sound scary, but ours are intentionally relaxed and supportive. We've all been new members and remember exactly how it feels.

Here’s the simple flow:

  • Step 1 – Video audition: We give guidance on song choice so you’re set up to succeed.

  • Step 2 – Live audition: A few scales, a light rhythm exercise, one small harmony test with other parts, and your prepared song (from the video or a new one).

That’s it! We’re not assessing perfection - we’re assessing potential and your openness to learn.

Pastoral care and newcomer support run deep in Soulfood’s DNA. It’s part of what keeps the environment safe, caring, and genuinely inclusive for people from every background, identity and life stage.

🎬“We need a tenor, tenor, a tenor is all we need … and a base”

Sometimes the best way to understand Soulfood isn’t to read about us — it’s to see (and hear) us in action. This short video captures our sound, our sense of fun, and our very direct ask…

“We need a tenor, tenor, a tenor is all we need ... and a base.” Click here and imagine yourself right there with us.

🌟 What Makes Soulfood a Brilliant Home for Tenors

1. A community you may have wondered about… but never quite stepped into

Many of our tenors joined after years of thinking, “Maybe I could join a choir… but I’m not sure I’m good enough.” They were wrong and their lives changed more than they expected.

2. Performances that are unforgettable

We perform 8-10 times per year across iconic Sydney venues, festivals and events. Think Opera House steps, Martin Place, Chatswood Concourse, private events and Christmas performances.

3. Unique experiences that stay with you

  • competed at World Choir Games (and won Gold!)

  • recorded albums

  • travelled for workshop weekends away

  • formed friendships that last decades

4. A choir driven by joy first, excellence naturally follows

We pursue musical excellence, and that requires commitment, regular rehearsals, learning your part at home and being present for your section. But the energy is playful and warm, not rigid. We’re ambitious but deeply grounded in community.

5. The tenor section is small, mighty and central

We won’t sugarcoat it, tenors and bases are always in demand because they matter. Your sound shapes our balance, our tone and the life of our arrangements. You won’t get lost in a crowd here. Your voice will genuinely make a difference.

📍 What Joining Soulfood Looks Like Week to Week

  • Rehearsals: Every Thursday night in Naremburn (arrive 7pm, singing by 7:15pm until 9.30pm).

  • Performances: Approximately 10-15 per year.

  • Music access: All charts and audio learning tracks provided via Dropbox.

  • Support: Section Leaders and the Assistant Artistic Director help you settle in, musically and socially. We also have Member Liaison Officers who provide pastoral support.

  • Community: Supper breaks, social events, workshop weekends and plenty of laughs.

🧡 Who Our Tenors and Basses Are

Everywhere and everyone. Engineers. Teachers. Uni students. Programmers. Physiotherapists. Full-time parents. People who grew up singing and people who didn’t. The common thread? They were looking for a creative home, a community, or simply a spark of joy.

🎤 Ready to Give It a Go?

If your chest voice hums on the commute, you automatically tap along to the beat. If you find yourself harmonising without thinking, if you’ve always wondered what it might feel like to perform with others… we’d love to meet you.
